KABUL (SW): The Ministry of Interior Affairs (MoIA) has vowed to quell discrimination against policewomen and create enabling environment to attract more women and girls to the security sector.
Ikram-u-Din Yawar, deputy minister at the MoIA, while addressing a conference organized by the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) in order to create “awareness for the police officers about human rights’ abuses in the security forces”, said the Ministry is striving to quell any discrimination against female police, and improve their capability. According to Yawar, putting an end to discrimination against women in the police ranks is top priority.
Authorities at the Ministry said in order to build the capacity of female police officers up to 1600 female recruits have been sent to Turkey for training.
Sima Samar, head of the AIHRC, urged the MoIA to end the culture of impunity, and said every person who commits abuse against female police should be prosecuted. She also encouraged female policewomen to seek justice against any sexual harassment in the work place. “The victims will be kept anonymous if they approach the AIHRC”, assured Samar.
