KABUL (SW): The Ministry of Finance (MoF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on Monday inked an agreement for the grant of $ 100 million.
According to the MoF officials, the USAID has paid this amount in return for the newly implemented reforms at the financial and managerial levels. These include the digitalization of the custom system, reforming the management laws and financial system, implementing new programs for women empowerment, improving the provincial budget system and restoring peace and security in the country.
Speaking at the joint press conference with the USAID representatives, Eklil Hakimi, the minister for finance, said that the Afghan leadership pledged to bring fundamental reforms in 40 departments during their trip to Washington. Hakimi noted that by the end of 2018, with the U.S. support, the Afghan government would be able to implement all reforms it has promised.
William Hammink, USAID mission director in Afghanistan, who was also present on the occasion, stated that the U.S. government provided this assistance to Afghanistan’s national budget after reviewing Kabul’s report on anti-corruption measures. He noted that the Afghan government has fulfilled the promises it made, and it has achieved the set targets.
He mentioned that last year, when the National Unity Government (NUG) leaders visited Washington, President Barack Obama made an announcement of $ 800 million for the implementation of reforms. The USAID mission director in Afghanistan also said that for the implementation of the reform agenda, the U.S. would help Afghanistan.
