KABUL (SW): The Masharano Jirga (upper house) on Sunday approved the Presidential decree on amendments in the Population Census Law calling for incorporating ‘Afghan’ and ethnicity of the card holder on the face of the proposed biometric cards.
The MJ members pronounced the marking of Afghan as well as ethnicity of the card holder on the proposed identity cards crucial for strengthening national unity in the country. They urged upon the government to expedite issuing the new cards to the citizens across the country.
Two weeks back, the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) rejected this decree calling it ‘unnecessary’. The fate of the decree now hangs with the joint commission of the two houses. In line with the previous decision of the commission of the two houses, the nationality and ethnicity of the card holders shall not be marked on the cards, but following public protests, the President issued another decree for amending the law.
