KABUL (SW): A number of Meshrano Jirga (upper house) members have said that the Chief Executive Office’s suggestion for issuing new electronic ID cards is against the Constitution.
The senators insisted that the word “Afghan” applies to all citizens living in the country and the draft proposed by the CEO Abdullah Abdullah is in contrast with the Article 4 of the Constitution. They demanded that the nationality “Afghan” should be evident on the electronic ID cards.
Zalmai Zabuli and Sher Mohammad Akhondzada, the two senators, said that we have the Constitution that is clear in this regard and there is no need to argue on such topics in this critical time in the country. These senators warned that they would call mass rallies, if the government did not meet their demands.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for Chief Executive Office, insisted that the President and donor countries have accepted the new proposal for electronic ID cards.
Mujeeb Rahman Rahimi, CEO spokesperson said that the suggestion is not against the law, and is the only solution to the ongoing controversy regarding electronic ID cards. According to the suggestion, the ID card holders would also be issued with a data page that would have additional information on it.
