KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has pronounced the Ministry of Interior (MoI) as the most corrupt institution.
Ghani said this while addressing the Annual European Union Anti-Corruption Conference here on Monday. In his remarks, the President noted that some appointments at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) have been done on the basis of ethnicities while as it should be done on the basis of the law, and by the Administrative Reforms and Civil Services Commission. Ghani also highlighted the need for better coordination among the various public and non-government anti-corruption organizations.
The conference took into account ways and means to curb corruption in various sectors.
The President stressed upon the need for a cohesive anti-corruption policy, prosecution of the corrupt officials, and no interference in the judiciary. He hailed the performance of the Ministry of Finance, and the Procurement Commission, and said up to $ 200 million have been saved thanks to smart management by these two.
Franz-Michael Mellbin, the EU Ambassador and EU Special Representative in Afghanistan, said on the occasion that the corrupt elements wish to create hurdles in the way of anti-corruption measures. He reiterated his resolve to stand by the people and the government of Afghanistan in fighting corruption.
