Ministry has no budget for needy children

KABUL (SW): While expressing concerns over the millions of orphan and needy children in the country, the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Martyrs and Disabled (MoLSAMD) on Sunday said it does not have any budget to take care of such children.

The Ministry marked the World Day against Child Labour here on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, Abdul Raziq Salar, director MoLSAMD, expressed concerns over the state of children that are orphan, are busy in hard labour or begging. He noted there are an estimated six million such children in various cities across the country. Salar lamented that there is no single penny allocated in the national budget for the welfare of such children.

He added the Ministry has some programs in sight, but lack of funds is hindering its implementation. “So far, we are helping and supporting such children with support from local and international aid agencies”, he said.

Shahidullah, a child labourer, said on the occasion he supports his family with a meagre income from work on the streets. The ragging violence and subsequent economic and social constraints have made it impossible for many families in Afghanistan to ensure proper education and welfare for their children.
