Military operations begin in Jaghori, Malistan

17/11/2018

GHAZNI (SW) – Military operations have begun in Ghazni’s restive Jaghori and Malistan districts to repulse the advancing Taliban, officials confirmed on Saturday.

More than two weeks after Taliban attacked Jaghori and Malistan districts, Ghazni governor spokesman, Mohammad Arif Nuri, said military operations were launched in Jaghori, targeting Taliban positions from the air and land.

He said the Taliban were expelled from Malistan and Jaghori, and the situation in these districts was under the control of the security forces.

On the other hand, Ghazni people's representatives in parliament have criticized the government. Abdul Qayum Sajjadi, a member of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house), has called for coordinated assaults against the Taliban. He went on to say the security forces are simply touring the area, not fighting the rebels.

Shah Gul Rezaie, another representative of Ghazni people in parliament, demanded the government to target the main bastions of the militants.

Zamin Ali Hedayat, district governor of Malistan, has confirmed arrival of fresh troops. He said the Taliban are still in their positions, and that the security forces are ready to begin military operations.

Some residents in the Jaghor district told Salam Watandar the Taliban are still present in a number of areas, but their attacks have diminished.
