PARUN (SW): The Afghan security forces usually have upper hand over the rebels in terms of arms used in clashes, but recently use of sniper rifles by the militants in Kunar and Nuristan have caused concerns.
Local officials informed that the militants associated with the Taliban and Daesh are targeting the security forces in Kunar’s Chapa Dara and in Nuristan’s Want Wegal districts. Security personnel at check posts in these areas vowed their moral is high, and they just need long-range rifles to take on the militant snipers.
When contacted, Gen. Naseer Ahmad Safi, commander of the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP) in the area, confirmed that the militants are targeting the security forces from a distance. He stressed the security personnel here are well equipped to defend themselves with bullet-proof jackets and headgear. Gen. Safi further said he would approach the higher authorities for more resources and necessary equipment for the security forces in these restive areas.
Many mountainous areas in Kunar and Nuristan were under the influence of the Taliban, but according to the security sources more and more pro-Daesh rebels are now gaining ground particularly in the Manogi district and other surrounding areas.
