KABUL (SW): The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) has expressed concerns over the sexual exploitation of mentally disabled girls.
In a moot about the state of affairs children are faced with on daily basis across the country, the AIHRC officials noted that those children facing mental illness need extra help and support. Suraya Raheem, AIHRC Commissioner, said on the occasion that young girls with mental illness are vulnerable to sexual exploitation, and there have been instances where adults have raped these minors and left to suffer under miserable situation. She lamented that the government and society has paid no attention to this segment of the society.
The AIHRC Commissioner underlined the need for dedicated safe homes for such vulnerable children.
Abdullah Abid, head of children’s rights section at the AIHRC, said on the occasion that they have registered some 235 cases of children’s forced marriages in the previous year while this year 95 such cases have been registered in the first three months of this year alone.
