KABUL (SW) – Two days ago, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan charged election commissioner Mawlana Abdullah over disrespect and life-threatening slurs against head of the Database within the commission.
As the Independent Election Commission officials gathered for a press conference today, Mawlana Abdullah took up the matter resulting in verbal spate and disorder. He went on to say the IEC has imposed a 15-day ban on him against speaking in the media after the charges levelled against him by the UNAMA.
However, Abdullah asserted the UNAMA behavior towards him is ‘undiplomatic’. He also warned UNAMA chief would be to blame if internal rifts emerged within the society.
Speaking on the occasion, deputy head of the IEC, Esmatullah Mal, said Mawlana’s comments on the UNAMA’s complaint letter were not part of the news conference agenda.
This comes as the IEC has commenced recount of votes. The IEC chief, Hava Alam Nuristani, said this drive is ongoing, but some hurdles remain in 13 provinces. She feared these hurdles could further delay the results.
