MAIMANA (SW): Officials in Faryab province have blamed commanders of the local uprising force for ‘selling off’ villages in Garziwan district to the Taliban for AFN 1300000.
Mula Faizullah, governor of Garziwan, informed Salam Watandar that the commanders of the local up-rising force have ‘sold-off’ Khwaja Gaar, Yokhun, Dara Shaakh, Takhara, Ab Bareek, and Baharak areas to the Taliban, before fleeing themselves to Mazar-e-Sharif. Urging the government to take immediate and effective measures to quell the rebels, he went on to claim only few areas close to the district center remain in the government control.
A while ago, the district governor had claimed that 70 members of the local uprising force have joined the Taliban.
Member of the provincial council, Sibghatullah Sailab, has echoed these concerns while blaming the local government for collaborating with the members of the local uprising force.
Officials informed commanders of the local uprising force against the Taliban are getting monthly salaries of AFN 150000.
Karim Yourish, spokesman for the Afghan National Police (ANP) in Faryab, has blamed the internal rift between different political parties, and personal feuds among commanders of such uprising forces for the fall of a number of districts to the Taliban. He stressed up to 75 per cent of the area in Garziwan district is under the government control.
The Taliban have not commented on this so far.
