Lingering tribal disputes leave hundreds dead in Nooristan

24/10/2015

PARUN(SW):Members of Nooristan Provincial Council has said that tribal conflicts between Kamdish and Kashtonz tribes have left hundreds of people killed and tens other wounded on both sides.

Residents of this remote area of the country say tribal disputes are on the rise in Nooristan but the government has done nothing to prevent them.

A number of locals told Salam Watandar that often houses and trees are burned and destroyed as a result of the feuds and the enmity goes on for years. It is said many disputes erupt over resources like forests and mountains. Sometimes even women become the victim in the disputes between the warring tribes.

Monawar Khan Hamdard, one of the tribal elders, said that the government has almost no presence in villages in this province. He added that the government has failed to find a solution to the lingering disputes. He noted that as the population naturally increases in the province, a number of people want to acquire more land that creates problems as others oppose them, which eventually leads to bitter disputes.

Saudullah Paindazoy, Head of Provincial Council in Nooristan, said that finding a solution to such disputes was not possible overnight. He stressed the local governance has no potential to do it.

He added that recently the government organized a meeting chaired by Asadullah Wafayee, a senior politician from Nooristan, aimed at solving tribal disputes between Kamdish and Kashtonz tribes. But the meeting has not been effective so far, Paidazoy regretted.

Farooq Khan, Director Security at the Provincial Police Headquarters in Nooristan, said in this regard that they would not allow anyone to attack others under any circumstances. The claims made by locals regarding hundreds of deaths so far however, puts a question mark over such claims.
