KABUL (SW): The coordination group for transitional justice in Afghanistan has welcomed the International Criminal Court’s announcement of probing alleged war crimes in the country.
The ICC has expressed willingness to probe alleged war crimes committed in Afghanistan after 2013 when the country became its member.
Naeem Nazari, member of the coordination group for transitional justice in Afghanistan, told a press conference today that the investigations by the ICC would help promote peace and stability. He added the investigations against alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity would put an end to the culture of impunity in the country.
The coordination group for transitional justice in Afghanistan urged upon the government to facilitate the ICC in its investigations in line with the Rome Accord, and also pave ground for the establishment of an ICC office in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, Ehsan Qaneh, an expert on legal affairs, said that the Kabul government is least interested in transitional justice because it fears it might hurt the peace process. The coordination group for transitional justice in Afghanistan has asked victims of the alleged war crimes to lodge their complaints by 31 January 2018 to the ICC.
