Lawmakers grill government over worsening security

KABUL (SW): Lamented the deteriorating state of security across the country, members of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house of the Parliament) on Monday urged the government to take practical measure towards peace and stability.

Abdul Rauf Ebrahimi, Speaker of the house said that Afghanistan has turned into a turf of battle for various international forces that has claimed the lives of so many Afghans. He stressed that the parliamentarians should play its due role in finding a solution to the problems and present it to the government to act upon it.

Wazhma Safi, a member of the Wolesi Jirga said on the occasion that the security situation in the eastern provinces was getting worse day by day.

She added that Daesh was on the rise in Kunar and Nooristan provinces. “If the government turned a blind eye to the presence of Daesh, this notorious group would soon conquer and dominate other provinces as well”, she feared.

Zahir Qadeer, Deputy Speaker of the House warned if the government failed to do so, he would organize his supporters in the east of the country and launch a parallel anti-terrorism drive there.

Zahir is son of a late warlord Abdul Qadeer and has significant influence in the eastern Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman and Nuristan provinces. Nangarhar in particular has been under the influence of surging militancy as intense fighting between the government forces, the Taliban and pro-Daesh groups have forced many to flee homes.

A number of former Taliban fighters have announced their allegiances with the Daesh in Nangarhar’s remote Achin, Shinwar, Nazyan and neighboring districts. “If the government does not pay serious attention to the situation in the eastern zone, we are fully prepared to take action”, Zahir declared.

“Our people are brutally killed on regular basis but the government has kept silence”, he lamented.
