Law on Protection of Child Rights enacted

KABUL (SW) – Following two years of wrangling over legal age of children, the Afghan government enacting the Law on Protection of Child Rights through a decree by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.

Mohammad Sarwar Danish, second vice president, told a moot in this connection on Sunday that the Law on Protection of Child Rights has been incorporated into the official gazette. He dubbed this law as one among the best such laws in the whole region. He said it covers all aspects of child rights.

Among main features of this law include proper nurturing of children, physical and psychological wellbeing of children, clearly marking responsibilities of parents and government towards children and provision of just legal services for the victims of child abuse.

Other main feature of this law included protection of children's basic rights, rehabilitation of children with disabilities, social care, cultural development, measures against child labor, child protection against economic exploitation and child abuse, protecting children against prostitution and sexual exploitation of children.

It said that the Law on Protection of Child Rights was sent to the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) about two years ago in 16 chapters and 108 articles for approval, but this law failed four times to win approval of the parliament. Only one of the articles of this law, which specifies the age of the child, prompted different views among the WJ members.
