PUL-I-KHUMRI (SW): Shortage of beds in Baghlan general hospital has resulted in the death of many children.
The provincial general hospital administration said in less than two months three children suffering from measles have died in Pul-i-Khumri.
The doctors at the hospital said the children’s ward can accommodate 35 children at a time, but more than 200 children are under treatment everyday which is unhygienic for the sick children.
Mirajuddin Miraj, one of the resident doctors, told Salam Watandar many children suffering from measles were admitted in the hospital and due to lack of beds for the sick children the measles disease spread to other admitted children too in the hospital. “Inevitably the doctors have suggested to treat the sick children at their homes”, informed Miraj.
According the hospital authorities 80 per cent of the beds are for emergency patients, but due surge in the number of sick children we do not have emergency services.
Many Baghlan residents travel to the public hospital from insecure areas of the province for the treatment of their children. According to them treating several sick children in one bed at the same time has increased the risk of transfer of other diseases to the already sick children.
Abdul Alim Ghafari, deputy director of provincial public health directorate, admitted the shortage of beds for the treatment in the children’s hospital and further added a well-equipped children’s ward is built and shall soon be put to use for the treatment of the children.
According to provincial public health officials Khost-Fring, Central Baghlan are the districts where measles is much common among the children. The officials consider insecurity in these districts great hindrance for the treatment of children with measles.
