29/12/2015

KUNDUZ CITY (SW): Military commanders in the northern Kunduz province has said a wide scale mop-up operation to fully clear Kunduz of the militants is underway.

Shir Aziz Kamawal, Commander of  808 Spinzar Corps, speaking to journalists on Tuesday said that the winter season provide a golden opportunity for the security forces to expel the militants from Kunduz and its outskirts. He said that clearing Kunduz of the Taliban, would put an end to the rumors that the Taliban would again attack on Kunduz.

He further said that currently 2,400 militants who have gained equipment following the three-day collapse of the city, have been fighting with the security forces on several fronts.

Ghulam Mahiuddin Ghori, Commander of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) in the north, who was also speaking alongside Kamawal said the mop-up operation would soon destroy all the equipments that the Taliban use to fight against security forces. The mop-up operation will be conducted soon because some residents have been concerned about the return of the militants to the province.

Currently the Taliban are only present in the outskirts of the provinces where they fight security forces at times. Taliban captured Kunduz for three days a few months back and it took two weeks for security forces to recapture the province.
