Kunduz seen on the brink of collapse, once more

01/02/2016

KUNDUZ CITY (SW): Interim governor of northern Kunduz province has warned that if major clean-up operation against the Taliban in this province is not conducted, the province might fell to the rebels once more.

Hamidulla Danish, the interim governor told Salam Watandar, that the three districts namely Dasht-e-Archi, Imam Saheb and Chahar Darah are under the strong influence of the Taliban. He said that the Taliban have set-up training camps there to equip and train young suicide attackers.

The Taliban have been blamed for rampant violence, killing and abduction in the province. Just recently, the Taliban attacked engineers belonging to the irrigation department and took them as hostage. A sense of fear has prevailed across the province that has been fueled by the militants’ propaganda and criminal acts.

On 28 September 2015, the Taliban forces overran the city, with government forces retreating outside of the city. The capture marked the first time since 2001 that the Taliban had taken control of a major city in Afghanistan. The Afghan government claimed to have largely recaptured Kunduz by  October 1th , 2015 in a counterattack.

President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani formed a special commission to probe the fall of Kunduz that blamed grey areas around the security establishment for the debacle.
