KUNDUZ CITY (SW): 5 years ago, 214 solar powered street lights worth 3.5 million afghanis were installed in Kunduz city.

But, residents of Kunduz have said due to the negligence of the provincial municipality for not maintaining the solar powered street lights are not functioning anymore.

Basir, a resident of the Kunduz city, told Salam Watandar that the street lights are not maintained since the past 5 years.

Aminullah Qazizada, another resident, said the solar-powered street lights are public property which should have been maintained by the government.

Authorities at the provincial municipality have said 95 per cent of the street lights are not functioning due to lack of maintenance workers in the municipality and the fall of the province to the Taliban insurgents.

Najibullah Omarkhil, municipal of Kunduz, talking to Salam Watandar said based on the agreements between provincial municipality and UN-Habitat, the repairmen of the solar powered street light will begin in two weeks. “The batteries attached to light poles are not functioning anymore. We have trained our employees in the solar-powered system in order to repair these street lights”, added Omarkhil.
