KUNDUZ CITY (SW): The government forces have taken back control of the Imam Saheb district and provincial capital Kunduz city on Thursday as they continue the clean-up operation in northern Kunduz province.
With the assistance of NATO forces, the operation to reclaim these areas began Tuesday from the city’s airport. Syed Sarwar Hussaini, Spokesman for the Provincial Police Headquarters has said government forces were busy searching and eliminating Taliban militants in various parts of the provincial capital. He claimed around 200 militants have been killed in the past 48 hours.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani monitored the situation in Kunduz with his security team via the control room at the Palace.
NATO forces have said in this regard they have a total of five air strikes against the rebels. U.S. forces conducted an airstrike in self-defence to eliminate the threat, it said in a communiqué.
Afghan Security Forces have full responsibility for their operations in Kunduz. Resolute Support service members are there to advice and assist. However, our service members have the right to protect themselves if necessary, NATO added.
U.S. forces conducted two airstrikes Sept. 29, the first at approximately 9:15 a.m. in the outskirts of Kunduz city, and the second at approximately 11:30 p.m. in the vicinity of the Kunduz airport. U.S. forces conducted three airstrikes Sept. 30, one at approximately 1 a.m. (the strike mentioned above), and two additional at approximately 5 p.m. all in the vicinity of the Kunduz airport, it noted.
Syed Mukhtar, head of the provincial health department told Salam Watandar some 130 wounded people have been treated so far.
Following fall of the Kudnuz city on Tuesday, the Imam Saheb district was captured by the rebels on Wednesday. It was reclaimed Thursday morning.
