ASADABAD (SW): Dozens of families in the Sarkani district of Kunar province have been displaced due to cross-border shelling from Pakistan.

These weary families are now living under dire conditions in the harsh winter. The displaced families do not consider the basic aid provided to them by the government as sufficient, and demand shelter from the authorities.

Noor Zamin is a Kunar resident who lost his wife and a young son as a mortar shell from Pakistan hit his house last week. He is now surviving with an injured toddler. He now fears for the life of his 6-month-old son.

Yar Gul, another survivor, said the locals left everything behind, and came to a safer part of the province literally empty handed. He is now living in a rented house, and finding it hard to make ends meet.

Along with Yar Gul’s family, more than 13 such families have been displaced due to the cross-border shelling by Pakistan. Meanwhile, Mohammad Nabi Ahmadi, provincial deputy governor, told Salam Watandar the government is aware about the issue. “We have started dispatching aid to the needy families, we have also considered 50 thousand afghanis cash support to each of the suffering families”, added Ahmadi.

According the provincial authorities, Pakistan has fired at least 300 mortar shells on Dangam, Sarkani and Khas Kunar districts of Kunar that killed 2 civilians, and injured 2 more besides displacing  more than 90 families.
