Kunar in need of shelter home for women

17/11/2016

ASADABAD (SW): Officials at the department of women affairs in the Kunar province stated that there is a dire need for women’s shelter homes here.

Sohela Babur, the head for department of women affairs in the province, told Salam Watandar that lack of a shelter house for homeless or other women in need is a serious problem the province is in faced with. She noted that several of those women who are victims of domestic violence come to the department of women affairs for help, but they cannot do anything for them as there is no shelter home available in the province.

Sohela Babur noted that a number of women who have survived domestic violence are now protected in safe houses belonging to respectable individuals.

Commenting on this issue, Wahidullah Kalimzai, the governor for Kunar province, said that he has asked the central government and the Ministry of Women Affairs to develop a shelter home for women in the province, but so far actions have not been taken in this regard.

Kalimzai noted that, for the time being, women who are victims of domestic violence are protected in women’s shelter in Nangarhar province.
