ASADABAD (SW): A Russian company that was tasked for the uplift of Kunar Dam has left the project in limbo by embezzling the funds worth $ 240, 000.

Engineer Atta-u-llah, director of the project, has told Salam Watandar the machinery of the dam has been out of date since 2004. He added the Ministry of Energy and Water had inked a contract worth 283 thousand dollars with Russian company called “Normal”, but the company ran away with 240 thousand dollars before the reconstruction began.

Based on the contract,he said the Russian company should have completed the reconstruction of the Kunar dam within six months. According to director of Kunar dam, the turbines installed by the Russian company have already been damaged.

But, Wali-u-llah Jabarkhil, head of procurement at the Ministry of Energy and Water, told Salam Watandar the contract was signed in 2004. “I am not even aware of the contract”, claimed Jabarkhil.

The residents of Kunar believe the contract of the reconstruction of the dam with the Russian company is suspicious. They have demanded explanation from government.

The Kunar dam can produce up to 700 kilowatts of electricity, it was first built 33 years ago.
