KABUL (SW): It was a normal day and Kubra, who after a tyring day at work, was on her way home. As she was approaching her house to open the door, she heard her daughter moaning and yelling. She hurriedly opened the door and stepped inside the yard. It was a familiar scene. She saw her husband beating her daughter with a rope.
Kubra has been married to her violent husband for 25 years and she has gone through misery and hardship all these years. According to her, not a single day passes without a fight in the morning and fight at night. She has 8 children, 4 boys and 4 girls, and they live in a poor residential area in the capital city Kabul.
Kubra said that she and her children have been beaten regularly and when they stepped outside of the house, her husband would throw almost anything at them.
According to Kubra, her husband has broken her hands and legs several times. As she got comfortable talking to Salam Watandar, she showed the scars of torture.
In a recent case, he beat up her daughter with a pipe to the extent that everybody was sure that she could never stand on her feet again. The next morning, her daughter hanged herself from the floor in the kitchen.
Kubra said that after her daughter’s death, her husband was sentenced to prison for 5 years. Her son was also sentenced to prison for stealing. Now she is the only bread winner of the family.
She said that she has taken decision to kill her husband when he releases from prison because if she doesn’t kill him, he will kill them.
Kubra is currently working as an office cleaner in one of the government’s offices and says that she earns afn 6000 per month, which is not sufficient enough to meet the needs of her family.
