KABUL (SW) – All is set for a landmark conference of religious scholars form Afghanistan and Pakistan in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) for the Afghan peace process.
Syed Ehsan Tahiri, spokesman for the High Peace Council (HPC), informed Salam Watandar the unparalleled conference would be held for two days in the KSA. He said the conference would commence in Jeddah on July 10 and would conclude the next day in the holy city of Mecca.
The Taliban have already announced not to attend this conference. They claim the conference has been influenced by the U.S. pressure.
Commenting on this, Attaullah Ludin, member of the Afghanistan Ulema Council, stressed the Taliban should accept the calls by the Muslim world that has declared the rebellion in Afghanistan as illegitimate. He hoped the conference in KSA would explicitly denounce the war in Afghanistan.
Analysts are equally optimistic about the outcome of the forthcoming conference in Jeddah and Mecca. Qazi Hassan Haqyar, an analyst on political affairs, said if the conference denounced the Taliban’s armed rebellion, it would yield positive results.
This comes as up to 3500 Afghan religious scholars gathered in Kabul last month denounced the ongoing armed rebellion in the country.
