Khalilzad says ‘spoilers’ attempting to disrupt peace processes

KABUL (SW) – Zalmay Khalilzad has said as peace talks near, ‘spoilers’ are becoming more desperate in their attempt to disrupt this historic opportunity.

The US special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation said in a series of tweets that the attack on Vice President Amrullah Saleh's convoy is the latest example of it.

“History has shown that when the opportunity for peace is close, spoilers will go to no end to try and stop it. Afghans are not falling for their trap”, he tweeted.

Khalilzad said Afghans know a successful peace process is the only antidote to the country's protracted conflict. “Their widespread yearning for peace will be for the two negotiating teams and their leaders' to satisfy”, he tweeted.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the explosives used in attack on the Vice President have been used by the Haqqani Network in a number of terrorist attacks in the past.

Meanwhile, a member of the Afghan government’s delegation set for talks with the Taliban in Doha told Salam Watandar the team from Kabul was likely to depart for the Qatari capital on Friday.

The Taliban said earlier this week they would not start the intra-Afghan talks until all of their inmates are freed.
