Khalilzad: Daesh opposes peace between Afghan govt, Taliban

15/05/2020

KABUL (SW) – The top US peace envoy for Afghanistan has said Daesh opposes a peace agreement between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban, and seeks to encourage sectarian war as in Iraq and Syria.

In a series of tweets, Zalmay Khalilzad urged that instead of falling into the ISIS trap and delay peace or create obstacles, Afghans must come together to 'crush this menace and pursue a historic peace opportunity'.

"The USG has assessed ISIS-K conducted the horrific attacks on a maternity ward and a funeral earlier this week in Afghanistan. ISIS has demonstrated a pattern for favoring these types of heinous attacks against civilians and is a threat to the Afghan people and to the world", he tweeted.

According to the US diplomat, the ISIS-K also opposes a peace agreement between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban, and seeks to encourage sectarian war as in Iraq and Syria.

More than 50 civilians, including babies and women, were killed in a terrorist attack on a hospital in Kabul and a funeral prayers gathering in Nangarhar on Tuesday.
