24/11/2019

KABUL (SW) – Defense minister, Assadullah Khalid, said on Sunday no one would be allowed to take the election process towards insecurity and violence.

He said this addressing a moot titled ‘Peace and Security’ here. Khalid said the security forces proved their impartiality during the elections, and they have the capabilities to thwart enemies’ plans against the process.

The defense minister further said that the politicians also understand that the country should not be pushed to conflict.

This comes as Chief Executive, Abdullah Abdullah has said using the security forces for electoral gains would be a ‘national treason’. Abdullah together with a number of presidential candidates such as Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, Rehmatullah Nabil and others have warned against an electoral crisis in the country.

Meanwhile, the NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, has said it is important now that the different electoral bodies can finalize the counting and then present the results for the presidential polls. He was addressing a presser after the meeting of the North Atlantic Council at the level of Foreign Ministers in Brussels on Wednesday.

“NATO is there to help the Afghan security forces make sure that they provide security for free and open elections. And NATO will never take part in the elections, never intervened in the elections. We are there to make sure that the elections are… to help the Afghans enabling free and fair elections in Afghanistan”, he said.
