KABUL (SW): Former President Hamid Karzai on Thursday lashed out at the US for its alleged interference in Afghan affairs.
Karzai was addressing a moot organized to deliberate upon the philosophy of 17th century’s great Pashto poet, scholar and warrior Khuhshal Khan Khtak. The former president has been at odds with the US for the past many years now.
In his remarks, Karzai said that the US should not make Afghans confront them; “if we are obliged to do so, we won’t change our decision”, he said. He stressed that the US has gravely interfered in various Afghan elections, including in 2009 when he says US wanted to unseat him from power. The former president asserted that the citizens in Afghanistan are not expressing their reaction against the US interference that does not mean they cannot.
He said Afghans have always been triumphed in wars but have failed in diplomacy. Karzai also expressed concerns over Afghanistan being influenced by Pakistan with every passing day. The former president went on to say that much of Afghanistan’s troubles have roots outside the country, and a lot has to do with the US and Pakistan.
This comes at a time when earlier in the week, the US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Kabul and held talks with the President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah. Many analysts criticized Kerry for putting his nose in Afghan affairs.
In his remarks, Karzai stressed that the Government of National Unity must convene the Loya Jirga in line with its promises.
