KANDAHAR (SW): Pomegranate is a major fruit crop in Kandahar and it forms the source of the livelihoods of thousands of people. The pomegranate exporters in the province however make the smallest profit as they are in face with inaccessibly to international markets.
Nasrullah Zohair, the in-charge for Kandahar Chamber of Commerce (KoCC) told Salam Watandar that export smooth would increase if Kandahar’s pomegranate production is supplied to the major markets in the world.
He noted that Kandahar can export upto 40,000 tons of pomegranates on annual basis, but so far only 25% it has been exported to the neighboring countries. He further said that as much as 12,000 tons of pomegranates have been exported to Pakistan and India during the current year. Zohair noted that Kandahar is potentially able to meet the world’s need for pomegranate if the government ease markets for pomegranate productions.
The in-charge for KCoC said that Kandahar’s fruits enjoy high quality, but lack of approach to markets is the main problem ahead to the fruit exporters.
Sayed Ahmad and Juma Gul, the tow orchard men in Kandahar province, say that they make less money than the amount spending on their orchards. They say lack of market is the main reason behind the loss they are undertaking.
