KANDAHAR CITY (SW): The directorate of commerce and industries in Kandahar has said more than 334 thousand tons of onions have been exported to India last year.
Allaudin Hamidi, provincial director of commerce and industries, told Salam Watandar local farmers earned more than $ 100 thousand from the export of onions to India. He noted the onion yield was particularly good in Arghandad, Zerai, Daman and Panjwai districts, and the farmers were content with the result this year. He expressed optimism for further surge in exports if more markets in other parts of the world are explored. Hamidi, however, underlined the need for ensuring good quality of onions and standard packaging to realize this dream.
Haji Ghamay and Haji Akhtar Mohammad, two farmers in the province, informed that a notable quantity of onions have also been exported to Pakistan. They viewed availability of biologically modified seeds, and other facilities to the farmers pivotal for growth in this sector.
The provincial director of commerce and industries has assured the farmers about measures in this regard. In the past, Allaudin Hamidi said export related procedures used to be performed in Kabul, but now that are done in Kandahar which have expedited the trade.
