Kandahar and Zabul elders want Noor to stay

21/12/2017

KABUL (SW): The elders of Kandahar and Zabul have urged that Atta Mohammad Noor, the CEO of Jamiat-e-Islami Party and the former governor of Balkh, must remain at his position until the next presidential election which will be held in 2019.

In a meeting in Kandahar on Thursday, they called on the government to take a wise step, and not bring chaos in the country.  Elders and local authorities from both provinces attended the meeting.

Sayed Jan Khakrizwal, chairman of Kandahar Provincial Council, said that the governorship in Balkh was the 'share' of Jamiat-e-Islmai Party, and hence Mr. Atta should remain on his post until the next election. Kharkrizwal, referring to President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, added that it is difficult to sustain a government when the vice president is in exile and allies are unhappy.

Meanwhile, Zabul Provincial Council Chairman, Atta Jan Haqbayan said that the situation of the country is extremely fragile, and the tensions shall be resolved through dialogue. Mr. Haqbayan called on foreign missions in Afghanistan to stay impartial and urged them not to intervene.

The Arg (Presidential Palace) announced the acceptance of Atta Mohammad Noor’s resignation from his post at the begging of this week, which was signed by Noor a while ago. However, hours later the news was rejected by Mr. Noor. The CEO of Jamiat-e-Islami Party and the governor of Balkh said that this resignation was submitted months ago with conditions and was no longer valid because the Arg didn’t respect the demands of the Jamiat-e-Islami party.
