KABUL (SW) – The interior ministry spokesman Tariq Arian has said the National Directorate of Security (NDS) has arrested Zmarai Pekan, the former head of public order police in Kabul.
Paikan was on the run since past couple of years when the Justice and Judicial Center for Serious Crimes Against Corruption (JCCC) sentenced him to eight years and six months in prison for abusing his powers and collaborating with his son in the murder of a man.
Back then, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, at an annual anti-corruption conference, instructed the interior ministry to arrest Zmarai Pekan as soon as possible.
Separately, the interior ministry has confirmed the Kabul police chief Amanullah Wahidi has been removed from his post over surging crimes in the capital city.
The city has recently witnessed an increase in bombings, rocket attacks and criminal activity.
Amanullah Wahidi was appointed Kabul police chief in March this year.
Kabul witnessed three rocket attacks during the 101st Independence Day celebrations. The rockets hit different parts of Kabul killing three people and injuring six others.
