KABUL (SW) – A number of Kabul residents have been irked by the ever-lowering levels of underground water in the capital city.
In conversation with Salam Watandar, a number of Kabul dwellers said they have to strive hard and even pay money for a single bucket of water. Two such residents, Ishaq and Khaksar, said those who can afford are buying water while men, women and children of poor families are struggling for water on daily basis. They said such poor families are consuming contaminated water causing diseases.
When contacted, Naveed Sayedi, spokesman for the directorate of water supply and canalization, told SW that the Kabul residents should use this natural resource with care and responsibility. He expressed concerns over indiscriminate extraction of ground water by beverage and mineral water firms as well as public toilets and sauna houses. He also blamed the swelling population in the city for the shortage of water.
Sayedi added the government is aware of the problem, and is striving hard to resolve it in the long-term.
