21/02/2016

KABUL (SW): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has confirmed that the quadrilateral conference in Kabul on Tuesday would decide the date for direct talks with the Taliban.

Khairullah Azad, spokesman for the MoFA told Salam Watandar that Kabul would host the fourth round of Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) talks among Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and the U.S. He noted that the meeting would chalk out date and plan for the direct talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

Azad expressed optimism about the propospects of peace in this regard.

On February 6, the third round of the four-nation process in its meeting in Islamabad had agreed to approach the Taliban office in Qatar to encourage them to join the process. Kabul and Afghan Taliban are to meet again after a gap of seven months.

The first-ever direct talks took place in July last year. But the second round was called off abruptly after the confirmation of the death of Taliban supreme leader Mullah Omar.

Najib Manali, a security affairs’ expert told Salam Watandar that the peace process needs time to nurture desired results. He noted that Pakistan too has its objectives associated with this process and it also desires peace.
