KABUL (SW): The authorities of the Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW), warning about the decline in groundwater level in Kabul, said that if measures are not taken to solve the problem, Kabul citizens will face drought within 5 years.
Ali Ahmad Osmani, the Minister of Energy and Water, in a joint conference with the Ministry of Urban Development Affairs and Housing (MoUDH) here in Kabul on Monday, warned that continued wastage of drinking water, drilling of septic wells and the lack of control of underground water supplies will cause Kabul citizens to suffer drought after 5 years. “It is possible that there will be no drinking water in the city within 5 years”, speculated Osmani.
According to him, the Ministry has a 5-year water resource management program, consisting of 3 parts, which is being implemented and the program will solve many water problems in the country.
Navid Rasooli, an advisor at the Ministry of Urban Development Affairs and Housing, stating concern over the wastage of drinking water and lowering groundwater levels informed that the groundwater level at the capital, Kabul, is 29.6 million cubic square. According to him, Kabul needs 130 million cubic square of drinking every year.
He added that the Ministry’s surveys indicate that 21 percent of septic wells in Kabul are managed properly without posing any harm to the underground water, but the rest of 79 percent of septic wells are posing danger to the underground water of the capital.
