KABUL (SW): The state of environment in the capital Kabul is worsening day by day, officials noted on the World Environment Day (WED) here on Tuesday.
Yaqub Haidari, governor of Kabul, told the gathering marking the WED that threats posed to the environment are worse than economic and security concerns. He informed the city is generating up to four tons of plastic waste on daily basis. He urged the Kabul residents to find an alternative for the plastic bags.
Expressing concerns over rapid growth of population in the city, the governor informed municipality has buried up to 4.5 million tons of waste in the past ten years alone, which is alarming. The governor said thousands of brick kilns are operating illegally in the surroundings of the city that also pose threat to the environment of the city.
Speaking on the occasion, Hameedullah Faruqi, chancellor Kabul Univeristy, said keeping the environment clean and green is the responsibility of each and every citizen. He said establishment of a dedicated faculty on environment at the KU has helped spread awareness and expertise in this regard.
For almost five decades, World Environment Day has been raising awareness, supporting action, and driving change. The theme for 2018 is "Beat Plastic Pollution". The host nation is India. By choosing this Theme, it is aimed that people may strive to changes in their everyday lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution.
