Kabul flooded with expired goods

23/05/2016

KABUL (SW): Afghanistan relies heavily on imports but the fact much of the expired goods, particularly food stuff remain in the shelves for sale has irked Kabul residents.

Expressing their concerns, a number of Kabul residents criticized the Kabul Municipality for it saying that it has not done enough to cease the expired food products being sold in Kabul. Kabul’s main markets “Mandawi” is full of expired food products.

A number of traders purchase the expired food products at cheaper than usual price and then supply them to the consumers in the remote areas across the city. The outdated food products are extremely harmful for health.

Haleem Jan, a trader in Mandawai asserted that poverty has compelled him to buy and sell such products.

This comes while the officials in Kabul Municipality have acknowledged that expired food products were being sold in Kabul’s markets.

Ahmad Zia Khalid, director for food affairs in the health department at the Kabul Municipality, told Salam Watandar that there is no denial that expired food stuff is being sold in Kabul. He however, added that efforts are underway and already there is a decline in this trend.

“Kabul has a population of more than seven million and we have only five staffers for this task, it is extremely hard to manage it this way”, he said.

Officials in Kabul Municipality said that they have confiscated 47000 Kg of expired food products since the beginning of the current year.
