KANDAHAR CITY (SW): Journalists in Kandahar province have announced strike against the killing of a fellow journalist in the city on Wednesday.
The Kandahar-based journalist, Abdul Manan Arghand, who was associated with the Kabul News TV, has been gunned down by unknown attackers.
Javed Ahmad Tanveer, president Kandahar Press Club, informed Salam Watandar Abdul Manan was gunned down on Wednesday in the Yarana Market area in Kandahar city. He said the journalist was facing threats for a while. Abdul Manan Arghand was active in the field of journalism for the past eight years.
Abdul Sami Ghairatmal, head of Nai-Supporting Open Media organization, has condemned the killing of journalist in the province. He stressed all parties to the conflict in Afghanistan need to acknowledge and respect neutrality of journalists.
Ahmd Ludin, head of the Journalists Protection Committee, has announced journalists would boycott all news and events until perpetrators behind the killing of Arghand are not arrested.
The spokesman for the provincial governor, Aziz Ahmad Aziz, has confirmed the shooting. Head of the directorate of information and culture, Fazal Bari Baryali, has assured journalists their concerns would be shared with the top officials.
In a statement, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has noted the terrorists wish to silence the voices of journalists in a bid to hide their crimes.
Over a year ago, a well-known writer and journalist Abdul Ghafor Perzo was killed by unknown armed men in the same city.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the killing of journalist Abdul Manan Arghand. The latest victim of targeted killing was born in the Zeray district of the province. Arghand had completed Zahir Shahi high-school and was studying Law at a private university.
