SHEBERGHAN (SW) – The local administration in Jawzjan has handed over the restive Darzad district to the Taliban, a member of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house), has claimed.
Halima Sadaf Karimi, a representative of Jawzjan at the WJ, said this year the government has also handed over two other districts Kham Ab and Qosh Tapa to the Taliban. According to her, Mangjek, Qirqeen and Mardiyan are also faced with security threats.
She warned if the government kept neglecting the threats, the Taliban would pose serious threats to the peace and stability in the provincial capital, Sheberghan, and a Kunduz-like disaster can emerge here.
A number of Jawzjan residents have also shared concerns in this connection.
Residents said the military helicopters have moved security forces from Darzab to Faryab. They claimed the security forces torched their bases before moving to Faryab.
The local civil society feared this move would yield negative consequences.
However, Abdul Maruf Aazar, spokesman for the provincial governor, said the district has been abandoned by the security forces without any resistance on the demand of the local population, and the security forces have taken position in Sheberghan.
The Taliban have not commented on this so far.
