KABUL (SW): The government of Japan on Wednesday pledged to provide $ 11 million for infrastructure development in the capital Kabul.
The project worth approximately USD 11.6 million, will construct Maslakh Road, the Abdul Haq Roundabout, as well as a new Makroyan Bridge in line with the Kabul City Master Plan.
The agreement was signed at the Embassy of Japan in Kabul by Mitsuji Suzuka, Ambassador of Japan, and Amjad Muhammad, Director and Representative ad interim, UNOPS Afghanistan. The ceremony was attended by Abdullah Jan Habibzai, acting mayor of Kabul.
Ambassador Mitsuji Suzuka said on the occasion this project would help boost local economy. He added it would link southern and eastern parts of the city.
Kabul’s interim mayor, Abdullah Jan Habibzai, said on the occasion Japan is the second biggest contributor for reconstruction in Afghanistan. He thanked Japan for its contribution towards the urban master plans and other development projects. Habibzai hoped the fresh project would also help improve environment.
Japan has been assisting Afghanistan’s nation-building efforts in various fields including security, infrastructure, agriculture, rural development, human capacity development, education, health, culture and humanitarian assistance. The cumulative Japanese assistance to Afghanistan since 2001 amounts to approximately $6.6 billion
