LASHKARGAH (SW): The provincial government of Helmand has blamed Iran for arming the Taliban militants, but the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said it does not have evidence yet.
The provincial governor Hayatullah Hayat said on Sunday that a number of foreign individuals from Iran and Pakistan had come to the Garmsir district. “They have been seen visiting a number of areas together with the Taliban”, Hayat said. He added further investigations are underway.
The governor added that the officials have recovered at least two Iran-made rockets that were fired by the Taliban at the provincial capital Lashkargah. Hayat said four Pakistani militants have been killed in the province in an air strike last week.
Local officials claim more than one hundred Iranians visited Garmsir three days ago, and they viewed the situation of frontlines along with the Taliban.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Radmansh, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense (MoD), told Salam Watandar no solid evidence is available yet to prove Iran’s interference in this regard. “We are utilizing all our resources to safeguard the territorial integrity and security of Afghanistan”, he said.
