LASHKARGAH (SW): Intense fighting is underway between the government forces and the Taliban on the outskirts of Lashkargah, provincial capital of Helmand province.
Ahmad Shakir, member of the provincial council told Salam Watandar that at least eight check posts of the Afghan National Police (ANP) are overrun by the militants near the third police directorate. With no specific knowledge, he claimed that a number of security men have lost lives. He noted that the violence is surging in Helmand with every passing day.
Thousands of civilians have been forced to abandon their homes and flee the insecure parts of the province.
Abdul Majeed, another member of the house said in this regard that the high-ranking security officials are to be blamed for the deteriorating security situation. He called for the need of competent and honest officers in the province.
Meanwhile, Umar Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor has said that the security situation is well under control. He noted that the Afghan National Army (ANA)’s Commandoes have been deployed in restive parts of the province to tackle the insurgents.
It is believed that the Taliban are aiming to move their Quetta’s Shura to Helmand.
