KABUL (SW): Nai- Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan has stated that as fighting is escalating in the provinces; more than 200 journalists have been displaced from Kunduz, Helmand and Farah provinces.
Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, Sidiq Tawhidi, the head for Nai said that majority of the journalists have fled Helmand to take refuge in capital Kabul and in the provinces of Kandahar and Farah.
He pointed out that so far 50 cases of violence against the journalists have been registered.
Tawhidi mentioned that in the wake of the insurgents’ assault on Kunduz, Roshani, Khawar and Sabnam TV and Radio Stations have been destroyed. He noted that almost half of their belongings have been looted.
Meanwhile, Rahimullah Samandar, the head for Afghanistan Union of Journalists said that the current year has been the worst for the journalists.
The affected media houses in the war-stricken provinces have asked the government to exempt them of the current year’s taxes and provide them with equipment.
This comes while yesterday Mohammad Yaqub Sharafat, the reporter for Radio and Television Afghanistan (RTA), was assassinated by anonymous gunmen in Zabul.
