TALUQAN (SW) – There is an evident surge in the presence of the Taliban rebels in Takhar’s Baharak district who are engaged in armed clashes with security forces.
Residents of up to four villages have left their homes due to the clashes. Mahkam Talash was the last to flee home from the Malmalay village. He said all of his relatives have left the area due to the looming threat.
Faizur Rehamn Haidari, district governor, confirmed the ragging clashes have displaced up to 600 locals from the area.
Dr. Gulistan, provincial head of the National Directorate of Security, informed Salam Watandar the Taliban placed their fighters in villages around Baharak in the past two days. He said 15 rebels have been killed and more than 20 wounded in last night operation forcing the rebels to flee.
He said the security forces are in control of the area. The NDS official said rebels from Kunduz’s Dasht-e-Archi and Aqtash districts also came for the rescue of the Taliban in Takhar.
Also on Sunday, the provincial council members expressed concerns over the growing clout of the Taliban in the province.
