Independence Day celebrated with renewed patriotism

KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Wednesday led the Independence Day celebrations at his Palace as rest of the country marked the day with traditional zeal and renewed patriotism.

Ghani, flanked by Acting Defense Minister Masum Stanikzai laid a floral wreath on the Independence Colum to commemorate the sacrifices of freedom fighters. Elegant band of the Afghan National Army (ANA) exquisitely played the national anthem as the President was given guard of honour on the occasion.

Vice President Sarwar Danish, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, Former President Hamid Karzai, other high ranking government officials, foreign diplomats and dignitaries joined the celebrations.

Elsewhere in the country, Afghan citizens, particularly the youth are marking the day in unparallel fashion to prove their love for their motherland.

In an exclusive interview with SW, Najib Manalay, Spokesman for the National Security council said measures have been in placed to mark the day in an unprecedented manner. He added more than 900 high-ranking officials and dignitaries would take part in the celebration at the palace.

Kabul’s Huzori Garden has been decorated for the public to collectively celebrate the country’s 96th Independence.

Manaly regretted that some security concerns however, did not allow the government to mark the way it wished to.

Ghafoor Liwal, renowed writer and intellect, too was of the opinion that the Independence Day celebrations have lost its flare due to insecurity. Recalling the glorious days of the past, he said 19 August used to be remain in people’s memories for months as Afghans across the country would celebrate the day with full enthusiasm, feel of freedom and security.
