GHOR (SW): Health authorities in Ghor province said that despite the measures taken to fight measles, the number of children suffering from measles is increasing every day.
Mohammad Arif Lalzad, Physician General (GP) of Ghor Provincial Hospital, said that since two months a number of children have been hospitalized for measles diseases in this hospital. According to him, measles disease has so far killed five children and is expanding.
The Ghor hospital’s GP said that 12 positive measles cases have been documented at this hospital. He considers the lack of vaccination of children under-nine months as one of the causes of catching the disease.
Hamidullah Motahed, a member of the Ghor Provincial Council, said that the reason for the spread of measles disease is insecurity in Firoozkooh and other districts in the province, saying that vaccination courses in most areas of Ghor province have not been implemented due to the insecurity and extensive presence of the armed anti-government groups.
Abdul Latif Rahimi, the head of the health department of this province, said the department has registered 54 measles cases in the last two months in the city of Firoozkooh, among which in two cases the disease has led to the death of the patient.
Mr. Rahimi said the department of health has launched a campaign to raise awareness and prevent the spread of the disease in the city and districts of the province.
Apart from the measles vaccine, more than 3,000 children in the northern Firoozkooh did not receive the polio vaccination due to insecurity.
