Inappropriate’ uniform of women footballers causes controversy

KABUL (SW): The Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) has apologized over the ‘inappropriate’ uniform worn by the national women’s team in recent matches against Jordan.

Karamuddin Karim, head of the AFF, has noted in a statement on the social media that the national team was expected to respect and follow Afghan culture, and wear uniform in accordance to that in practice sessions, and in the matches. He said the pictures of the girls with ‘inappropriate’ uniforms have gone viral on the social media causing an uproar.

He lamented that the national team of women footballers did not consider the sensitivities in this regard prompting him to apologize to the nation.

The national women’s team played two friendly matches against Jordan on Feb. 2 and on Feb. 5. In these matches, the national team’s players were not wearing headscarf and were seen playing in shorts.

It is worth noticing that a Danish firm HUMMEL produced a special full-body uniform for the Afghan side last year. Among the 25 players selected for this tour, 13 have been picked from within the country while the rest of 12 players have been selected from among the Afghan women and girls playing football in the U.S. and Europe.

Meanwhile, assistant coach of the Afghan side, Haley Carter, has said it is the player’s choice, and many of them did wear the full body uniform.
