KANDAHAR (SW): According to reports, 976 civilians have been killed in various incidents in Kandahar province and 769 other civilians have been wounded in the current year (2017-2018).

Roadside bombs, terrorist attacks, suicide explosions, and bullets fired by the government forces have been named as the main reasons for the deaths and injuries of these civilians.

Nematullah Hassani, an official at the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) in Kandahar told Salam Watandar that most of the incidents (417 killed and 407 injured) occcured due to the roadside-mines' explosions.

The deaths include 623 men, 163 women and 185 children and among the injured are 402 men and 174 women and 193 children, Hassani added.

According to Hassani, after the roadside mines, the terrorist attacks have killed and injured the most civilians followed by suicide explosions and shooting by the government troops.

The residents of Kandahar called on both sides involved in the war to pay more attention to the lives and safety of civilians during the war adding that killings of civilians are not permitted in any religion and faith.

Zia Durrani, a spokesperson for the Kandahar Police told Salam Watandar that the Taliban are responsible for the killings of the civilians rejecting the report that some deaths were caused by the shooting of the military forces on the civilians.

However, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a spokesperson of Taliban in Kandahar said the Taliban are only fighting with government and foreign troops and have not killed any civilians.
