KANDAHAR (SW): Extensive, illegal and unregulated fishing in Kandahar province has led to the fears that species of fish might get extinct here.
A number of residents told Salam Watandar that electrocution in the ponds and the use of explosive devices to kill a bulk of fish is going on that pose grim threat to the species.
Sayed Mohammad, an agriculture expert in Kandahar, while acknowledging that inappropriate fishing is going on in the province, asked the Kandahar Directorate of Environment Protection (KDEP) to take action against this. He asserted that those fishermen who violate the rules should be punished according to the law.
Ghulam Farooq Roshan, the head for Kandahar Directorate of Environment Protection (KDEP) also acknowledged that illegal fishing is going on in Kandahar province. He asked the media to educate the people on proper ways of fishing.
He added that though the KDEP is not able to prevent illegal fishing in all districts of the province, it is committed to take every possible measure to stop illegal fishing.
